House of Waine

House of Waine: 1 Night

Owned by Eric and Angela Marungi, and situated in Langata, the House of Waine sits on 2.5 acres of manicured garden, and offers its guests the kind of ambience and service that one would associate with a very well run international hotel. A smallish 11 bed-roomed hotel, the House of Waine is known for its attention to detail, and for the design of its rooms, all of which are slightly different. Shared areas include a lounge, a dining room, terraces, a heated pool (complete with pavilion and outdoor bar) and a main bar. The decor is somewhat traditional – beiges, browns, creams – but beautifully maintained, and helps create an atmosphere that is at once calm and private.

The rooms themselves are all en suite, 9 of which serve as either single, twin or double rooms. Simply – and sometimes incongruously – decorated, they are highly comfortable. The food is straightforward and tasty, while is service is friendly and efficient. Returning guests comment on the willingness of staff to assist with any and all queries.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Wilson airport for your schedule flight to Laikipia Plateau. On landing you will be met and assisted to transfer and check in at Lewa Safari Camp. Explore the unique landscape of Lewa Conservancy - travel out across the plateau, catching the bush at its most lively. With warm coffee, tea and snacks in hand your family will explore this spectacular and remote wilderness in a private safari vehicle, in pursuit of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos), the birds, the insects and the ungulates. Since your lodge is in a private game reserve, your adventures will be completely unobstructed and exclusive. As you follow a pride of lions teaching their offspring to hunt, or observe a leopardess as she shows her cubs to climb a tree, you will experience some of the most intimate wildlife encounters in the country.

Lewa Safari Camp

Lewa Safari Camp: 3 Nights

Nestled within the sprawling Laikipia plains, the charming Lewa Safari Camp is set on the privately-owned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy; home to a splendid array of wildlife, and some of Kenya’s most spectacular scenery. Spacious and luxurious, each of the camp’s thatch-covered tents boast a comfortable bed, lovely ensuite bathroom and private veranda. The guest areas overlook a popular waterhole and include a dining room, library, bar and an inviting sitting area with a fireplace. In between game viewing adventures, guests can retreat to the coolness of a sparkling swimming or enjoy a spot of game viewing from the camp’s hide. Adventures include twice-daily game drives, guided walks, Ngare Ndare forest excursions, horseback safaris and camel rides, as well as enchanting cultural tours.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to your local airstrip for your schedule flight to Mara North Conservancy. You will be received and transferred to Kicheche Mara Camp. Kicheche Mara Camp is a classic tented camp hidden in a beautiful valley in a prime wildlife area of the Mara North Conservancy. The luxury tents are laid out alongside a seasonal stream from where you can observe the resident birdlife and plains game beyond. The location is ideal as game viewing frequently starts in the camp itself and there is prime wildlife habitat on all sides providing an ideal base for your safari in the Masai Mara.

The Mara North Conservancy is a collective of lodge owners who work in partnership with over 800 local Maasai landowners to promote conservation and sustainable tourism in the region. As a private reserve, you will experience near exclusivity as you traverse the plains and rivers – a pleasant contrast to the Mara. Rising early, you may wish to set out today with a picnic breakfast to enjoy in a hide or beside the river. A safari here will give you plenty of opportunities to watch the resident lion prides closely. Alternatively, you may wish to set out on foot with a local Maasai Warrior, for greater intimacy and familiarity with your surroundings. These warriors will be able to show you and your family the techniques that have enabled them to survive in this challenging landscape for centuries.

Kicheche Mara

Kicheche Mara: 3 Nights

Tucked away in an acacia tree valley, Kicheche Mara Camp is one of only a few safari camps allowed to operate in the exclusive Mara North Conservancy. This rustic bush camp has only nine spacious safari tents, no fences, and overlooks the Olare Orok stream and game-filled plains. Kicheche Mara Camp offers guests an authentic bush feel but with all of the modern-day comforts guests could wish for. Kicheche Mara North is an excellent camp within its price range, offering a warm welcome, friendly management and service, lovely food and super guiding. The setting of the camp is beautiful, nestled into a valley overlooking the Olare Orok River with game often seen from camp. The property has the feel of an authentic tented camp with an informal ‘outdoor’ ambience. The tents are very comfortable and well furnished, however the emphasis is on your safari experience rather than luxury and relaxation. Consequently Kicheche Mara North tends to attract guests who are passionate about wildlife and are looking for an outstanding wildlife experience at a reasonable cost level.
