Itinerary

14 Days Bushlands and Beach

Upon arrival you will be picked up by your safari guide and transferred to House of Waine. House Of Waine is an 11 bedroom luxury boutique hotel on 2.5 acres that blends the elegance of gracious living with the spirit of modern Africa in an exclusive and serene setting. House Of Waine is centrally located near the best of Nairobi's attractions such as the Karen Blixen Museum, the Kazuri beads, The Giraffe centre and The world famous David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust amongst others.

Immersed in the leafy surrounds of Kenya’s beautiful Karen Forest is the elegant House of Waine – an upmarket retreat, which offers guests intimacy and superb accommodation. Guests can unwind in one of 11 individually decorated suites —each with a spacious, marble en-suite bathroom, satellite television, a complimentary personal non-alcoholic mini-bar, TV with satellite and local channels, and tea and coffee-making facilities. Appreciate colourful fresh flowers and delicious cookies delivered to your room each day.

House of Waine

House of Waine: 1 Night

Owned by Eric and Angela Marungi, and situated in Langata, the House of Waine sits on 2.5 acres of manicured garden, and offers its guests the kind of ambience and service that one would associate with a very well run international hotel. A smallish 11 bed-roomed hotel, the House of Waine is known for its attention to detail, and for the design of its rooms, all of which are slightly different. Shared areas include a lounge, a dining room, terraces, a heated pool (complete with pavilion and outdoor bar) and a main bar. The decor is somewhat traditional – beiges, browns, creams – but beautifully maintained, and helps create an atmosphere that is at once calm and private.

The rooms themselves are all en suite, 9 of which serve as either single, twin or double rooms. Simply – and sometimes incongruously – decorated, they are highly comfortable. The food is straightforward and tasty, while is service is friendly and efficient. Returning guests comment on the willingness of staff to assist with any and all queries.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Wilson Airport for your schedule flight to Meru National Park. On landing you will be met and assisted to transfer and check in at the famous Elsa's Kopje. Barely visible on approach, Elsa’s Kopje blends seamlessly into its surrounds. Perched high on top of Mughwango Hill, this superb lodge stands as tribute to Elsa, the orphaned lioness made famous in the movie Born Free. Charming cottages are crafted around the natural features of the hill, each with a spacious bedroom, open sitting rooms, ensuite bathroom and large veranda with breath-taking views of the savannah below. Elsa’s Private House – with double rooms, a sitting room, veranda and plunge pool – is ideal for families.

Meru is an example of how wildlife can thrive when its space is protected. It is a success story: the land has been conserved and the animals have been protected. Wildlife populations have doubled and tripled, and today, they continue to rise at a great speed. After a short drive to Meru National Park, you will discover the wonders of wildlife conservation while out on game drives with conservationist guides. They will lead you off the trails to show how certain animals are now flourishing, including the African cheetah.

Elsa’s Kopje

Elsa’s Kopje: 3 Nights

Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is an established and exclusive safari lodge in the heart of Meru and is named after Elsa the lioness made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s well-loved book ‘Born Free’. It is a lovely property with a relaxing feel and magnificent views over Meru. Whilst the property is extremely comfortable and well managed, it should not be considered as a genuine five star option as it maintains an authentic safari feel in both the build and décor. The lay out of the lodge means that guests are afforded high levels of privacy in their rooms and consequently the lodge can feel very quiet, something that often appeals to many guests! Game viewing in Meru is varied and potentially very good, but not nearly as guaranteed as other areas of Kenya, especially when it comes to predators. We feel Elsa’s is best suited to travellers seeking to enjoy a little escapism and the wilderness of Meru in addition to both birding and game viewing.

You will transfer to the Wilson Airport for your flight to Lewa Conservancy. On arrival you will be met and assisted to check in for an early lunch at the Lewa Wilderness Camp. Lewa Conservancy - with unbridled vistas of Mount Kenya soaring towards the south and sweeping panoramas of arid lands cascading towards the north, your glamping resort in this UNESCO World Heritage Site affords a luxurious introduction to the Kenyan wilderness. You will cruise across thorny plains to serene watering holes with an experienced ranger for a welcoming first safari upon arrival. There are many ways to appreciate the natural beauty encompassing Lewa beyond extensive safari trips. You may meander the flourishing Ngare Ndare Forest bordering the conservancy, where you would wallow in the crystal clear springs slowly filled by light silver waterfalls and cross sturdy canopy bridges soaring above the forest floor. You may also explore Lewa on horse or camel, trotting the plains in eager anticipation of up-close encounters with the wondrous wildlife.

lewa wilderness camp

Lewa Wilderness Camp: 3 Nights

Lewa Wilderness is situated on the edge of one of Kenya’s most private game sanctuaries, the wildlife-rich Lewa Conservancy. Guests are accommodated in charming cottages which include spacious bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms, fireplaces and verandas.

Guest areas include a cosy sitting room, an open-air dining area and a saltwater pool boasting breathtaking panoramas of the valley below. Healthy and delicious meals are prepared with fresh produce from the lodge’s verdant organic garden. Those in need of leisure time can simply relax with a book in the pretty garden or take a refreshing dip in the inviting pool.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to your local airstrip for your schedule flight to Mara North Conservancy. You will be received and transferred to Kicheche Mara Camp. Kicheche Mara Camp is a classic tented camp hidden in a beautiful valley in a prime wildlife area of the Mara North Conservancy. The luxury tents are laid out alongside a seasonal stream from where you can observe the resident birdlife and plains game beyond. The location is ideal as game viewing frequently starts in the camp itself and there is prime wildlife habitat on all sides providing an ideal base for your safari in the Masai Mara.

The Mara North Conservancy is a collective of lodge owners who work in partnership with over 800 local Maasai landowners to promote conservation and sustainable tourism in the region. As a private reserve, you will experience near exclusivity as you traverse the plains and rivers – a pleasant contrast to the Mara. Rising early, you may wish to set out today with a picnic breakfast to enjoy in a hide or beside the river. A safari here will give you plenty of opportunities to watch the resident lion prides closely. Alternatively, you may wish to set out on foot with a local Maasai Warrior, for greater intimacy and familiarity with your surroundings. These warriors will be able to show you and your family the techniques that have enabled them to survive in this challenging landscape for centuries.

Kicheche Mara

Kicheche Mara: 3 Nights

Tucked away in an acacia tree valley, Kicheche Mara Camp is one of only a few safari camps allowed to operate in the exclusive Mara North Conservancy. This rustic bush camp has only nine spacious safari tents, no fences, and overlooks the Olare Orok stream and game-filled plains. Kicheche Mara Camp offers guests an authentic bush feel but with all of the modern-day comforts guests could wish for. Kicheche Mara North is an excellent camp within its price range, offering a warm welcome, friendly management and service, lovely food and super guiding. The setting of the camp is beautiful, nestled into a valley overlooking the Olare Orok River with game often seen from camp. The property has the feel of an authentic tented camp with an informal ‘outdoor’ ambience. The tents are very comfortable and well furnished, however the emphasis is on your safari experience rather than luxury and relaxation. Consequently Kicheche Mara North tends to attract guests who are passionate about wildlife and are looking for an outstanding wildlife experience at a reasonable cost level.

After breakfast, you will bid farewell to the bush and head out on your schedule flight to Diani beach. Upon landing you will be transferred to Chale Island Resort - Immerse yourself in a unique private island escape to Chale Island. Off the beaten track, Chale Island, blends effortlessly with an abundance of natural beauty and offers chic coastal accommodation and a wide range of mouth-watering dining options. A carefully curated bucket-list of activities throws up the chance for an escape to nature that's hard to beat, carving memories to last a lifetime.

With warm, authentic Kenyan hospitality, Chale Island offers the perfect chance to unwind and rejuvenate in a breathtaking natural environment with the backdrop of the Indian Ocean and the local wildlife complementing the Chale Island experience.
